Duane in Klickitat Canyon

This day ride out of Vancouver starts with a trip east on WA SR 14 , this leg beats Oregons’ I-84 hands down in scenic Columbia Gorge beauty and challenging riding . If you choose the superslab I-84, cross the river at the Hood River bridge and turn right toward WA SR 141. At the 70 mile mark on WA SR 14, you will be turning left on WA SR 141 and shadow the White Salmon River through Husum, Wa to BZ Corners. This leg is approximately 10.2 miles.

At BZ Corners you will turn right / east on the BZ - Glenwood highway for 19.7 miles to Glenwood. There is a good restaurant in Glenwood and by now it should be just about lunchtime. You will leave Glenwood on the BZ -Glenwood highway which becomes the Glenwood Highway. This excellent pavement will parallel the Klickitat River and Canyon through the old mill towns of Wahkiacus and Klickitat, Wa for 21 miles. The road is now marked as WA SR 142.

Crash in the Canyon

Be careful in the canyon you don’t want to crash like these members of the VTX club in 2004. You will find yourself back on WA SR 14 at Lyle, WA. Heading west on SR 14 gives you the option of crossing the Hood River bridge to Oregon I-84, or continuing on SR 14 back to Vancouver.

The views on a good day from SR-14 can be really stunning as this picture of Mt Hood, the Columbia River and the Burlington Northern Railroad reveals.

Mt Hood from SR-14

Of course there will probably be some windsurfers too! Total time is approximately 5.5 hours and about 220 miles.

Good Riding and Enjoy !

DamDan and I just rode this route and had a great time. I still don’t know why we didn’t get any photos. Too busy keeping from going off the edge I guess!

Rode this route today with my friend Les. The road was rough in spots and there were a few police hiding along SR14, but the curves were awesome and the views were breathtaking!
